NC DISTRICT COURT JUDGE DISTRICT 35, Seat 2
NOTE: You may vote for one. Candidates are presented below in the order they appear on your ballot.
Reason for my Endorsement: Local attorneys tell me Eggers-Gryder is skilled, fair and honest. Besides, she’s nothing like her nephew, and I owe her one.
Rebecca Eggers-Gryder (Republican)

Eggers-Gryder is the daughter of well known Boone attorney Stacey Clyde Eggers Jr. (died 2018), who founded the Eggers Eggers Eggers and Eggers law firm. She graduated from Appalachian State University with a Political Science degree and from Campbell University with her law degree. She was appointed to a District Court seat by Gov. Pat McCrory in 2015, won election in her own right in 2016 and was reelected in 2020.
I find it interesting and reassuring that Republican Eggers-Gryder described retiring Appeals Court Judge Linda McGee as a “mentor.” [https://www.facebook.com/Judge.Becca/posts/pfbid0id4Hy2kQafd7jM4hTx8a8MEX1ZvyQECwCHoZKrapVSXj5aqrQV6RJoco5dEpSZ1Hl]
Eggers-Gryder was profiled for her Christian faith and commitment in November 2018 by the local-grown magazine “The Journey.” In the interview she talked openly about the 2015 death of her 21-year-oid son in a traffic accident.
“For a year after my son died, I kept a ‘Comfort and Joy’ journal because you have to look for it. Every day I needed to find three things that gave me comfort or gave me joy. I just had to journal about the whole situation and I wrote down Travis and [his surviving brother] Daniel stories. You know, while I had one son that died, I had to be very present for Daniel because he lost a brother. And though I miss [Travis] every day, I also have peace because I know where he is.”
She is excoriated by long-ago Watauga Sheriff candidate and local personality Kenneth Gottfried for “child abuse.” According to Gottfried, she’s a perpetrator of “domestic violence” because of her rulings.
But that’s not the Eggers-Gryder I’m told about when I call around to ask how she is as a Judge. I am told she is kind, fair and even-handed in working cases and in her relationship with other judges and lawyers. Besides, I owe her one.
Many years ago, the powers that be in the then Watauga County Democratic Party decided my activism was too much for them to handle, so they worked behind the scenes to persuade then Republican District Attorney, Tom Rusher, into placing me under investigation for something or another. I can’t even remember clearly what it was about, but I ended up having to retain an attorney. Every single Democratic attorney I called for representation said, “no way.” So I finally had to retain none other than Becca Eggers-Gryder to get me out of a jam. Which she did (after soaking me financially of course 🙂
She’s nothing like her nephew, thank God, and Tom Rusher and I are now friends.
