Presidential Preference

(Democratic Ballot Only)

NOTE: You may vote for one. Candidates are presented below in the order they appear on your ballot.

Reason for my Endorsement: I don’t know who “No Preference” is. I need a name before I jump ship, and there’s no place to write in Sherrod Brown.

Biden’s primary opponent is “No Preference,” and a sizable protest vote for “No Preference” among the young and some progressives will likely and understandably shake out. No hard feelings. And full disclosure, I endorsed and voted for Bernie Sanders in the 2020 Presidential primary and would again today if he was running. (I realize that likely ticks off a bunch of the rest of my readers too.)

But as Sanders says: “The last thing this country needs is a Donald Trump or some other right-wing demagogue who is going to try to undermine American democracy or take away a woman’s right to choose, or not address the crisis of gun violence, or racism, sexism or homophobia. So, I’m in to do what I can to make sure that the president is reelected.”

And I get some may a feel an instinct for marking “No Preference” too. I get pissed off at Biden all the time.

I got really pissed at him during the Anita Hill hearings back in 1991, where I stayed glued, like a lot of us women, to the TV hearings, teeth gritted and fist shaking. And there’s a lot of good, strong talk about voter rights, but too many opportunities lost on that front. Then there’s the handling of the Israel-Hamas war. While I fully support Israel’s right to fight back against the slaughter of its citizens, Biden seems to have forgotten that Netanyahu is a far right, authoritarian dickhead who is now responsible for 25,000 innocent civilians killed in Gaza. How FUBAR is that?

But truth is, I happen to really admire Joe Biden most of the time, have for years since he became an outspoken, solidly progressive senator, and I believe he has done a decent job with the hand he’s dealt–weaving and dodging landmines from the half-baked lunatics (including Manchin and Sinema) in Washington. Sometimes I wonder how he’s gotten anything done at all:

— It was a historic moment when President Joe Biden became the first sitting president to join a picket line, and it made my heart sing. “I’m ‘the Most Pro-Union President In American History. And I Make No Apologies for It.”

— Proposed and signed the American Rescue Plan to change the course of the pandemic and jumpstart the economy. The American Rescue Plan funded a massive vaccination campaign, safely re-opened schools for in-person learning, helped 200,000 child care providers keep their doors open, and delivered relief to American families.

— Announced his support for marriage equality more than a decade ago, before the Obama Admin was really wanting him to, becoming the highest-ranking U.S. government official to do so at the time.

— Signed historic bipartisan legislation protecting marriage for same-sex and interracial couples.

— Put Ketanji Brown Jackson on the Supreme Court.

Insisted on debt relief for college students for middle- and working-class families (to the utter disgust of Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, bless her heart).

Rallied the world to support Ukraine against Putin’s invasion.

— Strengthened strategic friendships and partnerships around the world that Trump had partially dismantled through borishness and authoritarian demands.

Pardoned all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession and urged governors to do the same.

Reversed the discriminatory ban on transgender service members in the military; strengthened non-discrimination protections in health care, housing, education, and employment; and ensured that transgender Americans can access government support and services.

— Encouraged many new sign-ups for health insurance, producing currently the most people insured in our history.

That’s not everything but that’s not nothing either.
